Who Doesn’t want to make a difference – really?
I’m very serious in asking this question and I believe that in truth the vast majority of people want to make a difference, they want to have a positive influence, on their families, friends, co-workers, society or whomever and not in the way that says “Hey, I’m better than you so you’d better listen to what I’m saying.” you know, kind of like the average politician… bunch of alleged “do-good-ers” whose only real motivation is their own narcissistic ascension to power and notoriety with an addendum of wealth.
I believe most people want to and some try to but more often than not come up short. Why is that do you think?
I think one reason is that because people are judged not by what is in their heart but by appearance and this is natural of course since we are not God and cannot see into a mans heart. People judge by what they see so when they see people who are successful, however they define that, they assume these people must be doing something right. Of course we all know that many of those who have reached the top of the ladder of success may only be one rung away from falling off. Their personal lives are often a wreck but non the less they still have influence.
It is sad but true that having money, in our culture, also means having influence. Does that mean that if you don’t have money you can’t have influence? Of course not but having money means the sphere of ones influence does have a much broader reach, in my opinion.
So I ask you, do you think that if you were a successful business person and had a lot of money and were judged by the world as “Successful”, do you think you could influence a few people that you could not influence otherwise?
We need only to look at people like Oprah (you know who I’m talking about without me even saying her last name don’t you?) or Donald Trump or other wealthy, apparently successful people who, when they speak, people listen. And while admiring their accomplishment, I’m not a fan of either of these people and their philosophies but literally millions of people are influenced by these individuals and they affect peoples lives and I’ve got to believe that when Oprah and Donald put their heads on their pillows at night they probably feel pretty good about that? (Hopefully in humility)
So What’s my point?
The point is money and success do have influence but the problem, in my view, is that far too many of those people in a position of influence, from politicians on down are having and have had a negative influence on our society, culture and the world and it’s time for more people with the right motives to have more influence.
People who understand that influence is NOT shoving their personal agenda and values down everyone else’ throat but rather that lead by example and hopefully others will want to emulate them because they want what they have….. you know, like the USA used to do before they decided it was their JOB to subordinate the rest of the world into submitting themselves to our authority just because we think we are superior to every other nation on earth and because we have or had the “Biggest Stick”.
Of course there is the danger that when you attain that influence you will forget where you came from and what your motivation was to begin with or feel that you are somehow intrinsically superior so, you must be on your guard. Many people who want to be rich fall into a snare and many rich are controlled by the wealth rather than the other way around.
Art Williams, the founder of A.L. Williams Financial Services back in the ’80’s wrote a book, “Pushing Up People” and he was right about many things in that book but the title may have been misguided in that when it comes to people “pushing” is something that is pretty much impossible. Art didn’t mean it in that context of course but the point is that “caring” about people and having their best interest at heart and “pushing” them to be their very best is really where it’s at.
It is an undeniable principle of life that putting others before yourself is by far the most fulfilling philosophy of life once can have. (No surprise since the God who made us said as much in his word.)
Ask yourself, “what could I do for others if I were successful and had a lot of money that I can’t do now?” “What could I do for my family and my posterity if I had a lot of money and success that I can’t do now?”
Who would you like to influence or help? Whose life would you like to make a difference in? You get the point I’m certain.
